The study of wrecks of Phoenician trading ships from around 450 BC suggests that onboard they used to have charred barrels for storage of drinking water. Why such barrels? One of our clients approached us seeking help to resolve a challenge they were posed with. They own a huge reverse-osmosis-based effluent treatment plant. Supplied by an international EPC contracting company, this plant deals with large volumes of effluent on a daily basis. The smooth operation of this plant is so crucial that even a minor glitch can lead to huge losses.

The Problem

Their manufacturing capacity had increased, so more effluent was being generated. What they noticed was that as the load of the effluent increased, the pretreatment section faced certain upsets and filters started getting clogged in 8-10 hours. This would mean increased spending on consumables and higher downtime. Client was in huge distress and sought our help in resolving the issue.

The Solution

Gopani team was deployed to understand what exactly was the problem. Gopani’s team of experts can analyze the nature of effluent coming in from various points. They can also analyze what’s wrong with the pretreatment, what are the dosing chemicals, and how is the overall chemistry. They can identify the real cause or a set of causes that lead to the rapid clogging of the filters. Once we found out the exact causes behind the issue, we wrote our recommendations for the pretreatment section.

We also found that they were using some low-cost melt blown cartridge filters which was a prominent reason for early choking. The foremost recommendation we gave was to switch to our high efficiency melt blown cartridge filter: RO Protect Extreme. The biggest impact of this change of filters was that the operating life of cartridge filters shot up to one week from a meagre 8-10 hours. Even though RO Protect Extreme is made available at a slightly higher price than the low-cost melt blown, which they were using earlier, the overall cost has come down due to reduced changeouts. Lesser downtime also translates into increased productivity and a substantial saving of man-hours. The earlier filters could withstand differential pressure of about 0.8 to 1 bar, after which they needed to be replaced, whereas our RO Protect Extreme can operate until 2.4 bar.

These cartridge filters are pretty unique in the sense that not only do they offer high efficiency, but they also possess excellent dirt holding and differential pressure withstanding capabilities. They have a slightly rough outer surface which would avoid formation of a slimy layer that would prematurely choke the cartridge filter. Why FRP (Fibreglass Reinforced Polymer) Housings?

As the conventional sources of water are depleting fast, there will be an increased dependence on sea water for general human requirements. We have been receiving inquiries for filter housings for sea water desalination since a few decades. More often than not, we were being asked to offer stainless steel duplex or stainless steel super duplex. Sometimes it was FRP filter housings. When it comes to dealing with sea water, stainless steel housings offer a big challenge: they are likely to get corroded. Even a rubber lining isn’t a foolproof solution because the abrasive effect of sea water can create a pin hole which can then get corroded and propagate the corrosion. Besides FRP housings aren’t only non-corrosive, but are light-weight and cost-effective.

Industrial Wastewater Treatment

Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plants are meant for turning wastewater into an effluent which can be released back to the environment. They remove or reduce the chemical and biological pollutants from the wastewater so as to make the fluid safe for discharge. These plants have to deal with a wide array of organic and inorganic chemical compounds. Of all the processes, it has been found, adsorption by activated carbon tackles the broadest range of contaminants. Activated carbon helps in the process by adsorbing hydrophobic and high molecular weight compounds which industrial wastewaters are riddled with. This leads to a huge reduction in COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand).

Municipal Wastewater Treatment

Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants have to tackle the sewage generated in the living and commercial spaces. Activated Carbon is used in sewage treatment when the secondary effluent possesses non-biodegradable compounds. These compounds can prove to be lethal for the aquatic life. Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) for Wastewater Treatment

When treating the wastewater with this type, the liquid is made to percolate through a bed of granular activated carbon. Generally the filters (also called contactors) made for using this type of activated carbon are fixed-bed with downflow column – either a steel column or a steel or concrete rectangular tank. Contaminants are adsorbed as the liquid feeded from the top gravitates. Lately new style contactors have come up: expanded bed and moving bed. Regenerability is one of the most significant features of granular activated carbon. The handling is simple and operational costs are lower with this type.

Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) for Wastewater Treatment

Powdered Activated Carbon is dosed into the stream or in the holding basin either as a dry powder or as an aqueous solution. After the completion of the process, it has to be removed from the effluent. The existing tanks can be utilized for this treatment. Unlike the granular type, the powdered activated carbon cannot be regenerated and has to be disposed to a landfill or an incinerator.

The Importance of Condensate Polishing Units

To reduce the discharge and consumption of water, it is becoming a norm to reuse the steam condensate. Condensate Polishing Units are meant for purification of steam condensate before it re-enters the turbines or boilers. Condensate is often found to contain both suspended and dissolved impurities. Chloride, sodium, silica, etc. are the types of commonly found dissolved impurities. Suspended impurities include iron, copper, nickel, etc. Using such contaminated water for feed can lead to scaling, corrosion, and reduced efficiency of the equipments. Hence condensate polishers are employed to ensure that the water entering the turbines or boilers is devoid of contaminants.

Condensate polishing units rely on ion exchange technology. Hence their operation is similar to that of water softeners.
